Man charged after schoolboy dies in crash with bin lorry while cycling in Edinburgh

A man has been charged after a schoolboy died after being hit by a rubbish lorry while cycling in Edinburgh.

Thomas Wong, 11, was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision on Whitehouse Road, near its junction with Braehead Road, at around 8.20am on Friday 1 March 2024.

The Cramond Primary School pupil was cycling at the time of the incident.

A 28-year-old man was arrested in May in connection with the incident.

The police say that he has now been charged with a traffic offense and a report has been submitted to the Fiscal Prosecutor.

He is expected to appear in court at a later date.

Earlier this year, his family said they were “completely devastated” by their child’s death.

They said in a statement: ‘Thomas was the perfect son. He was the best little brother to his older sister and was adored by his whole family.

“Thomas went to Cramond Primary School, which he loved. He made good friends there. We will all miss him terribly.

“We are very grateful for all the sympathy and heartfelt messages we have received from people. Thank you.”

Thomas’ headteacher paid tribute, saying the school was “completely devastated by the tragic news of the sudden death of one of our pupils”.

She said: “Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.

“He was always smiling. He was a positive, friendly and curious member of our school community.

“He was kind and always willing to support others and will be greatly missed by us all.”
