Stay warm and safe while using a generator

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) – With so many people in Aroostook County without power Thursday morning, many households turned to generators to keep their homes warm. However, the Aroostook Emergency Management Agency has received reports of people using their generators indoors, which can cause more problems. The most common problem is the concern of inhaling exhaust fumes.

Darren Woods, director of the Aroostook Emergency Management Agency, said, “We want to make sure that you only use generators outside and that the generator exhaust is not entering your structure through a window or door. If we are talking about multi-day restoration, which is a possibility, consider starting your generator. Run it for an hour, an hour and a half, chill things in the fridge, heat your house, then turn it off for 2 to 3 hours so you don’t burn all the fuel very quickly.” says Woods. that anyone still without power should keep these safety concerns in mind when using a generator.
