Florida Gators vs. Arizona State Sun Devils Basketball Preview

Florida Gators vs. Arizona State Sun Devils Basketball Preview

To maintain the momentum from the beginning of the season, the number 9 Florida Gators men’s basketball team makes a special stop in Atlanta. In Hoopsgiving Holidays tournament, the Gators take on the Arizona State Sun Devils on Saturday afternoon at State Farm Arena.

While the Gators look like clear favorites in this matchup, you can’t underestimate any opponent. Especially one coached by Bobby Hurley, one of the most accomplished basketball minds in the sport.

As a result, this game comes down to matchups and talent, with some succeeding, others going above and beyond.

The identity of the Sun Devil

First and foremost, the Sun Devils function as a reflection of their coach. Hurley, a former All-American point guard at Duke during their first championship run, prefers playing strong guard. Four guards will see an average of over 25 minutes of court time during their games.

As a result, favoring the small ball helps the Sun Devils with their ball movement and use of speed to create shooting opportunities against bigger teams. Defensively, though, Arizona State relies on a freshman rim protector Jayden Quaintancewho returns 3.6 punts per game, which leads the Big 12 Conference. Additionally, only seven players see a strong rotation.

As a result of logging heavy minutes, if foul trouble occurs, which could be a danger when playing a Florida offense, it changes the dynamic of their approach.

The entire Sun Devil offense runs through the freshman Joson Sanon. The Fall River, Massachusetts native excels at scoring. Despite starting just three games, Soson leads the team in points per game (15.9) and three-point field goal percentage (.543).

Not really a volume shooter, Sonon’s efficiency keeps the ball flowing through his teammates’ hands. Florida guard Will Richard should cover Sanon and give him fits. Exploiting him defensively will also take away his offensive prowess. Taking him out of his comfort zone defensively, Sonon expends energy usually reserved for the offensive side of the court.

Overview

While Arizona State is more than just one player, the team runs through Sanon. If it rolls, Florida could be in for a long day. However, based on the number of athletes alone, the Gators could turn this game into a shootout, which does not suit Arizona State.

Not that they want to take the air out of the ball, but ASU can’t keep pace with the Gators. UF will bring quite a bit of an advantage in the areas of size, speed and overall playmaking ability.

If the Gators stifle Sanon, the game is set for an easy afternoon.

The The Florida Gators and Arizona State Sun Devils are scheduled to square off at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia at 3:30. on Saturday and televised on the SEC Network.
