SAN ANTONIO – Despite the initial belief that Officer William Kasberg’s death was accidental, the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled his death a suicide.

The shooting happened around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Columbia Heights Elementary School building on Fitch Street near Zarzamora Street. Kasberg, a 30-year veteran of the force, was packing to attend a state-mandated ALERRT training at the closed elementary school.

According to a news release from the San Antonio Police Department, Kasberg shot himself with his personal weapon.

The department says it has also been notified that the Rockport Police Department has opened a criminal investigation into Kasberg for an incident that occurred in their jurisdiction.

According to a news release from the Rockport Police Department, Kasberg was visiting Rockport with his girlfriend and family in November.

While there, his girlfriend’s family member found an invasive video recording of a woman, without consent, that Kasberg allegedly made.

An incident report says this happened at a hotel or motel and the video was shot in a bathroom.

On December 9, Rockport detectives contacted Kasberg about the incident. They say he indicated he would talk to them about it at a later date.

He took his own life the next morning.

That crime of invasive video recording in a bathroom or dressing room is a state jail felony.

SAPD and Rockport PD say they are still investigating all of this.

SAPD has made a wellness facility, psychological services, peer support and department chaplains available to department staff to assist officers.
